Many also embrace the need to fill a dual role, that of content expert as well as expert advocate– though that isn\u2019t really what they signed up for.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t know the extent of the impact of school budget cuts at the time of this posting. Schools are still grappling with re-opening plans. But we do know some programs may be at risk. Being vigilant is important.<\/p>\n<p>We also know that any budget or policy change is felt most keenly at the local level\u2014by teachers (and students and families, of course). The <a href=\"http:\/\/artsedtn.org\/resources\/\">Action Response Team (ART) Advocacy Toolkit<\/a> contains a customized assistance request form as well as helpful sample documents (op-ed, letter to school board), checklist and message points. While some of the language is specific to Tennessee, it could certainly be adapted to other states and locales. All documents are shareable for your use. Thanks to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/artsed411.org\/\">California Alliance for Arts Education\u00a0<\/a>for the inspiration to get this started in Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>We have already witnessed this work in action. Quick thinking and prepared advocates turned around threatened budget cuts in Cannon and McNairy Counties. In Cannon, the K-8 visual arts budget was preserved with a coordinated advocacy effort led by teachers, with the support of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnarteducation.org\/\">Tennessee Art Education Association (TAEA)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0ArtsEd Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>In McNairy County, band and athletic stipends and some programs were threatened. A consistent winner of the Best Communities for Music Education designation\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nammfoundation\/?__tn__=K-R&eid=ARDPZUl7emN-fSrAzuN5i36ETEYh9rQBTTzcbDcQXGh5wsIFTCBvQKll022uUaVhrlwIBJ-gg-tPVEt6&fref=mentions&__xts__%5B0%5D=68.ARBLptqr0_RcBSw2rc3s1A68XYUmnGK9lWXtm1hN6C7JeH3BOGOgMG-FkO_078T2o9gtq0OP5SlQysq_W5YNo9Rqj85zN0jO7r7xdfraqOPhjaCx3msld50AzrGtVJUWImcu9qoUqqDZZp6hbvAvzqi5OEOzKfHITIAtNQCQ2tNPeGxrL3KEGgGtgVbuwLrq7bm-HWv3s9ZI38jbLPwR5knBwTA3w2EQPFlSiWBPLTTOu15CWdTRbO-Rb3K_kE03VKsO_UHNYYIOMBAQXOPXz3u9egbEyFXW-LqYneffkev0fVCEnnb7_hlBFz9fEDbkK7aEtfGcR6oZdgrz2_YGPdXa\">NAMM Foundation<\/a>, the McNairy community and parents rallied to save the funding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coalitions work.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-971 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/elevateartsed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Teamwork-300x275.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elevateartsed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Teamwork-300x275.png 300w, https:\/\/elevateartsed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Teamwork.png 595w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Founded just three years ago, ArtsEd Tennessee\u2019s purpose is to advocate for visual and performing arts education for all students in Tennessee by mobilizing a coalition of statewide advocates. With a focus on state policy, ArtsEd Tennessee is a champion for supportive policies and essential funding to advance quality, accessible arts education for all students.<\/p>\n<p>Former music educator and self-professed political enthusiast, Stephen Coleman serves as executive director; core members include each of the professional arts educator associations (dance, music, theatre, visual arts) and corporate member KHS America. Supporting organizations include the NAMM Foundation, CMA Foundation, Americans for the Arts, Tennessee Arts Academy Foundation, Amro Music, and KHS America. Disclaimer: I am a founding member and advisor to the organization.<\/p>\n<p>Some highlights of the past three years include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sponsored Joint Resolution 759, signed by the governor and approved unanimously by the General Assembly, affirming the value of arts education<\/li>\n<li>In partnership with Americans for the Arts, co-sponsored 5 advocacy workshops across TN<\/li>\n<li>Defeated a bill that would have jeopardized students\u2019 ability to take four years of arts courses in high school<\/li>\n<li>Promoted arts education through a statewide candidate survey<\/li>\n<li>Monitored hundreds of education bills<\/li>\n<li>Cultivated relationships with key state legislators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>We did not anticipate the need for customized assistance for local advocates, but here we are.
